New solution for surface checks
While the drilling appears smooth from surface, the AST can work hard down-hole to keep vibrations and stick-slip at bay. This makes surface checks of the AST tool important. For this purpose, an improved wear-gauge with sectors identifying free-play (wear) is being launched. The new solution is developed in cooperation with BP Baku based on their extensive AST experience.
The all-elastomeric gauge also serves as a transport cover for the telescopic AST mandrel. The gauge is stored in the dog-house while drilling.

Drilling vibrations removed. Offshore Oman – Upper Cretaceous
Severe vibrations and stick-slip were encountered through the mixed, hard carbonates in the Aruma Group below the West Bukha platform operated by DNO Oman. To get to the root of the problem, 9” H-Series AST tools were run in several BHA types. A consistent drop in vibrations was seen with AST and at the same time the Rate Of Penetration (ROP) increased significantly compared to a recent offset well. Based on the AST affecting the bit’s depth-of-cut only, the results singled out an erratic cutter interaction with the carbonates as the source of the problem. West Bukha is located offshore Oman. Erratic cutter interaction was the source of severe vibrations. |

Accessing the reserves below the massive layers of hard Shetland carbonates in the Central North Sea has historically been associated with high costs from vibration and stick-slip induced failures. Since 2009 however the combination of Anti-stall Technology and aggressive bits has proven capable of changing this. The potential in the new approach was recently demonstrated by Centrica UK. More..

More vibration mitigation in the Caspian Sea Downhole anti-stall technology (AST) has been in regular use for challenging wells in the ACG (Azeri, Chirag, Gunashili) development with BP as the technical operator since 2010. The same technology is now also being implemented to reduce risk and provide for safe progress starting with the SDX-07a appraisal well that precedes the second stage of the Shah Deniz development.
